to Barber, Jolley isnt necessarily on the outs in Oakland. But he has been a casualty of head coach Bill Callahans search for the most proficient tight end in his ever-evolving offense. The overall game plan for any given week might determine who gets the call at tight end. Jolley is the most productive receiver. O.J. Santiago is the largest and most proven blocker.
Rookie Teyo Johnson can do both, but is still trying to develop consistency.
"I try to prepare every game as if Ill play every snap," Jolley said. "You never know whether youre going to get every snap or zero snaps in a game."
Just when he had all but disappeared, Jolley re-emerged against Baltimore last week. He played a great deal, caught one pass over the middle for 26 yards, and could have had more, except that Rick Mirers tingling right arm was causing him to overthrow receivers early in the game.
Of course, Jolley would prefer to start and have practically every pass thrown his way. But he does see advantages to sharing the position.
"Playing 60 or 70 snaps a game is a lot different than playing 30 or 40," he said. "Not just because your body gets beat down a little, but because you dont have as much energy. Its hard to get down the field when you play 70 snaps a game."
But as Barber noted: "Its a lot better than playing zero."

According to the Associated Press, Rich Gannon plans to resume throwing in about six weeks, ahead of schedule for the 2002 NFL MVP after having shoulder surgery last month.
"Its coming along," Gannon said Thursday, raising his arms to show he has regained his range of motion.
The 37-year-old Gannon was placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and underwent surgery Nov. 13 back home in Minnesota. Gannon was knocked out of Oaklands 17-10 loss to Kansas City on Oct. 20.
The Raiders hope to have the 16-year veteran ready by spring mini-camps.','12/21/2003','6:30:00 AM','Sunday',920 6486,12,16,'Walls
