How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. Over the past few years, technology has allowed the interfaces for online drafts to become much more user-friendly, meaning that beginners and experts alike can easily select an entire team in a short period of time.

Steelers might bring back the 31-year-old Bettis if they draft or sign another running back, but only at a lower price.

"Thats something Ill look at at the end of the year," Bettis said. "If they come to me and talk about it, well talk about it. Until then, theres nothing to talk about."

Except his attempt to keep moving up the rushing list. Bettis passed Thurman Thomas and former Steelers star Franco Harris the last two weeks and needs 129 yards in his final two games to overtake No. 6 Jim Brown.

Bettis likely would have passed Allen (12,243 yards) and Brown (12,312) weeks ago if he hadnt started the season as Zereoues backup; Bettis gained only 21 yards in the first two games.

Bettis returned to the lineup last month and has 239 yards in his last four games, including a season-high 106 against Oakland on Dec. 7. Unlike the last two seasons, when he was sidelined with groin and knee injuries, Bettis is getting most of his yards during the second half of the schedule.

Tony Dorsett, No. 5 on the rushing list, is 556 yards away, but Bettis might be trying to overtake him while wearing another uniform.

"I know I want to play next year and thats as far as I can go with it," Bettis said. "Just go out and play hard, thats the way I look at it every week."

In a semi-related note. ...

Cowher acknowledge the Steelers threw the ball too much against the Jets, considering the blizzard conditions at Giants Stadium. He admitted that Tommy Maddox had trouble gripping the ball in the poor weather. Maddox completed just 16 of 38 passes for 137 yards. The Steelers ran it only 24 times with Bettis gaining 68 yards on 16 carries.

"In hindsight, if we had known that passing so much would have been incompletions, yes we probably should have run it. ..."

Itll be cold in Pittsburgh on Sunday, but with only a 10 percent chance of precipitation, the conditions wont be anywhere near as bad as they were in New Jersey last Sunday.

And finally. ...
