Running For More Than Records...','In an article published Wednesday, Associated Press sports writer Alan Robinson reminded readers that Jerome Bettis wont be running just for the record books tomorrow in an otherwise inconsequential Chargers-Steelers game. He might be running for his job.
The Steelers have been among the NFLs most visible underachievers this season, and that could translate into plenty of changes. Bettis, the No. 8 rusher in NFL history, could be among them.
Bettis is set to make $3.62 million in 2004, hefty money for a running back coming off a second straight season in which he didnt gain 1,000 yards. Given Bettis recent injury history, it might be money the Steelers choose to spend elsewhere, possibly on his replacement.
Thats why Bettis realizes every play, every carry, every yard gained Sunday against San Diego could be his last in a Steelers home game. He needs 60 yards to pass Marcus Allen and move into seventh place on the rushing list, and he sounds like a man who intends to get them.
"It would be great to get the 60 yards here, so Im definitely going to shoot for it," Bettis said Wednesday. "Yeah, its special. Its the last one (home game) this season, and it possibly could be the last one here."
The Steelers are dropping no hints about Bettis. Head coach Bill Cowher, who refused to guarantee Bettis a job going into training camp, hasnt said if he wants Bettis to return.

Bettis has 642 yards and likely will surpass his 666 yards of last season, but will finish well below the 1,154 yards he averaged in his first 10 seasons.
To stay in Pittsburgh, Bettis might be amenable to renegotiating his contract, though he has had no such discussions with ownership. Bettis is signed through 2006, but none of the money is guaranteed.
After watching Amos Zereoue (403 yards) do little in his half-season as a starter, the
