In the past 10 seasons, only one quarterback has won the Super Bowl without finishing among the top four in his conference in passer rating. The aberration is Trent Dilfer, while the other starters were Brad Johnson, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, John Elway, Brett Favre, Troy Aikman and Steve Young.
Fiedler is rated 15th in the AFC.
That is part of the reason some have thrown Warners name into the Miami mix.
Fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo won a Super Bowl with Dilfer in 2001. Dilfer finished the season ranked 11th in the AFC in passer rating and claimed a ring mostly because his team had the most statistically dominating defense in NFL history.
"There are two things that are determining factors in winning in the NFL," Ayanbadejo said. "One is a great defense. A great defense can make up for mistakes a quarterback makes. Two is having a great quarterback. A great quarterback can make up for the mistakes a defense makes.
"So you know, one kind of washes the hand of the other. If you look at teams with a tradition of winning, they either have dominating, dominating defense or a great quarterback."
Some would argue that Miamis defense is on that "great" level.
But as Schad contends: "Few would argue that Fiedler is a great quarterback."
No NFL quarterback has a worse rating in the fourth quarter (19.2). Only San Diegos Drew Brees has a worse rating on third down (36.4).
Does a great quarterback make a team great or does a great team help create a great quarterback? It appears the former.
The opposing quarterbacks in Miamis eight victories have struggled, with an average rating of 75.1 for the season.
The opposing quarterbacks in Miamis six defeats have an average rating of 86.4.
While Fiedler may not be deserving of all the blame for Miamis offensive woes this season -- the Dolphins could finish with the worst numbers
