As reported by Newark Star-Ledger staffer Kimberly Jones, it was one thing for Shockey to think about playing for a head coach besides Fassel.
"Its going to be hard playing for someone else, but, like he said, maybe change is good," Shockey said yesterday. "Maybe its time for something to change around here."
But it was quite another thing for him to consider a future without tight ends coach Mike Pope.
"I cant imagine that," Shockey said. "Thats too far away to think about. Hes like a father to me. Im going to be really heartbroken if he leaves me."
Sixteen assistant coaches will be fired along with Fassel at the end of the season. The assistants have another year remaining on their contracts, and the Giants will send them to the Senior Bowl in January and allow them to continue to use their offices as they job hunt.
Fassel said he has "concern" that his assistant coaches will be taken care of and would consider hiring some of them if he gets another NFL job. There is a chance a couple could be retained by the new Giants head coach, but there are no guarantees.
Pope, 61, is in his 13th season as a Giants assistant, a tenure that ran from 1983-91 and from 2000 until the current season. He has been a member of the staff on each of the Giants Super Bowl teams. He also has worked with Tom Coughlin, Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel, three candidates to replace Fassel.
Pope would seem to be one of the more desirable of the possible holdovers.
"Well see," Pope said.
Last season as a rookie, Shockey was voted to the Pro Bowl and was named All-Pro. He has missed the past five games because of injury and still could be named to this years Pro Bowl when those teams are announced today.
