M. Walker, Neil ODonnell worked with the first team Thursday, hours after he rejoined the Tennessee Titans when the NFL approved a deal with the veteran quarterback.
"After a couple reps, it felt like I never left it. It really did," ODonnell said. "I feel good, my minds fresh and Im here really more than anything to win a championship."
Getting ODonnell back became a necessity after Billy Volek lacerated his spleen against the Bills last Sunday. Rookie Jason Gesser has been the only healthy quarterback, with starter Steve McNair nursing a cracked bone spur in his left ankle.
Head Jeff Fisher said ODonnell did well studying the game plan in the hours before practice, and the veteran would have started if the Titans had to play Thursday.
"That kind of tells you why hes here, why its important for us to get him back. If Steves able to play, then Neil will back up, so well just take it from there. But right now Steves still struggling with the leg," Fisher said.
The Titans can clinch a playoff berth if they beat the Houston Texans on Sunday. A victory would allow them to rest McNair in the regular-season finale on Dec. 28 against Tampa Bay.
McNair hasnt worn a protective boot on his sprained left ankle the past few days. But the typically quick healer said Thursday he was frustrated with how slowly his ankle has progressed. He also has a cracked bone spur in the ankle, which affects how he plants his foot to throw.
The quarterback, voted to the Pro Bowl on Thursday, tried dropping back on his own at practice before having to stop.
"If I can go out there and I feel a lot better between now and Sunday morning, Ill give it a go," McNair said.
"Im just thankful that he came back to give us a chance, if I cant go, to win."
Of course, Ill continue to monitor McNairs status closely and pass along pertinent developments in as timely a manner as possible.
