How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. Over the past few years, technology has allowed the interfaces for online drafts to become much more user-friendly, meaning that beginners and experts alike can easily select an entire team in a short period of time.

"Mike McMahon is in a tough spot with the Lions, and he knows it."

Hes 24 years old, in his third NFL season, backing up 25-year-old Joey Harrington, whos in his second season.

Theres no indication that the quarterbacks will reverse roles anytime soon.

"Its very hard," McMahon said Wednesday. "Joeys a very good quarterback and hes going to be a great quarterback, so theres going to come a time the Lions are going to have to almost choose.

"And its already in Joeys favor, but so be it. Just keep working hard and who knows whats going to happen?"

All of which makes it more important than ever for McMahon to take advantage of the playing time he is expected to get in at least one of the two remaining games.

Mariucci isnt making any promises, but McMahon is getting additional reps in practice this week, and it is likely he will play at Carolina or in the finale against St. Louis at Ford Field a week later.

"Hes always been hoping to play, hes always been waiting for his opportunity," Mariucci said. "We dont have any structured plan right now to put him in at a certain point. Well just see how the game goes.

"Joey understands that, Mike understands that, and theyre both getting ready but Joey is getting the lions share of the practice snaps still."

The additional playing time might be a reward for McMahons hard work on the practice field and the weight room, but the Lions also want another chance to evaluate him in game conditions before he becomes a restricted free agent in March.

Although McMahon started seven games in his first two seasons, Mariucci has seen him only twice in a game. He took one play when Harrington suffered a dislocated finger Sept. 21 against Minnesota and played roughly 60 percent of the Oct. 19 game against Dallas.

The Lions love McMahons athletic ability, but his accuracy remains a question and a possible roadblock to his future with the Lions. He completed 43.9 percent of his passes in two seasons under former coach Marty Mornhinweg and completed just five of 20 throws for
