"Its not really my cup of tea to come out and tell a guy his business," Berkman said. "Im not a football player but I do know a little bit about sliding. Usually from trial and error -- a lot of error."

Nevertheless, Berkman came out to Texans practice Thursday to give Carr a quick lesson that could save his shoulder from further knocks and pings. Berkman, who claims hed make a fine tight end if the Texans would give him a shot, rolled left, pumped faked at the 10-yard line and slid gently into the end zone.

Perfect form, although he didnt pop up like he would have on second base.

"Well, theres no base and no reason to," Berkman said. "Unless youre in a two-minute drill and need to get back to the huddle."

Carr, for one, was impressed.

"Killer slide, its like hes done it before," Carr said. "That was a solid effort. Its too bad you didnt come out here last week, I definitely could have used your help."

Too little, too late, according to Berkman.

"Thats like closing the barn door after the horse ran out," he said.

Perhaps. But now when Carr escapes the barn and heads for open pastures, he has a visual to help him when defenders close in. ...

For what its worth, Carr followed the same drill as Wednesday, handing off but not throwing in team drills. Hell be evaluated again tomorrow. Running back Domanick Davis was limited to light running.

Ill have more on the status of both men as developments warrant. ...

In the meantime. ... The Sports XChange suggested Wednesday that Davis, who was able to play through the injury last week, gaining 101 yards against one of the worst run defenses in the league, will play again this week.

But how effective he will be remains to seen.

Whatever the case, Houston cant afford to be without its most dangerous offensive weapon, especially with short-yardage back Stacey Mack out for the season, Jonathan Wells exiled to
