Steve McNair, who is hobbled by a cracked bone spur in his left ankle, did not play last week, ending his streak of consecutive starts at 45. He is expected to play against the Texans, although head coach Jeff Fisher said it will be a game-time decision.
With McNair out of practice yesterday, rookie Jason Gesser, who has yet to play in an NFL game, took all the snaps with the first-team offense.
Backup quarterback Billy Volek, who started in place of McNair last Sunday, suffered a lacerated spleen while leading the Titans to victory over the Bills and is out for the season.
ODonnell, 37, backed up McNair during the 1999-2002 seasons and started seven games. Five of the starts were in 1999 after McNair had back surgery.
The Titans released ODonnell in February, re-signed him in June and released him again on Aug. 31, opting to go with Volek as McNairs backup.
ODonnell hasnt played since the Titans released him, although he worked out for the Packers earlier this fall and was on several teams emergency list.
He kept his home in Nashville and hoped for a chance to return to the Titans.
The Titans are expected to place Volek on injured reserve to clear a roster spot for ODonnell, who said hes stayed in shape by working out at a local YMCA.
According to Wyatt, ODonnell should get a pretty good workout if hes on the practice field today. McNairs ankle is improving, but he is expected to miss practice again.
"He is moving around better," Fisher said.
"Last week at this time he was on crutches, and now hes not, so he is significantly better. Now is that good enough to play? We dont know yet. Smith also missed practice with a groin strain, and hes being listed as doubtful.
