expectations in what was supposed to be an impact season.
The Broncos like what theyve seen from rookie Adrian Madise, but hes too inexperienced to be counted on for real contributions at this point, and they were afraid they would lose him to another team if they had moved him to the practice squad at the start of the regular season. His roster spot prevented Denver from signing another veteran receiver who couldve helped.
Chris Cole, who was put on injured reserve last week, is basically a special-teams ace, and converted cornerback Deltha ONeal is a work in progress as a wideout. ...
Clinton Portis has two years left on his contract after this season, which would not make an extension a pressing need.
But if youll recall, his agent was calling for an extension after his impressive rookie season in 2002.
And in a column published Thursday, SportsLine.com insider Pete Prisco advised readers to look for the Broncos to address this issue after the season in an attempt to get him signed to a long-term deal.
Portis is clearly among the most dangerous backs in the league, which is why the Broncos would be wise to lock him up. The longer they wait, the higher the price. Of course, the longer Portis waits, the bigger the injury risk.
Portis is a major bargain for Denver this season, with a base salary of $300,000 and a cap figure of $622,500. His base next season is $380,000 and then $455,000 in 2005. So for two outstanding seasons, Portis will have been paid a total of $1.815 million, counting his $1.29 million signing bonus and the $225,000 he got in base salary last season.
As Prisco summed up: "What a steal for the Broncos. Enjoy it, though. It wont last."
