mentioned the risks of playing with a new left tackle, Qasim Mitchell, if Mike Gandys shoulder injury hasnt healed when Gandy returns to practice Friday. He wondered whether right guard Chris Villarrial would be back at full strength, as expected, from a strained side muscle or if Terrence Metcalf would have to make his second NFL start.
Shoop brought up almost every possibility except the one Bears fans wanted to hear -- that Grossmans presence alone forces him to rethink the Bears conservative passing-game philosophy because Shoop never has started a quarterback as skilled in 58 games as offensive coordinator.
"Those [injuries] will all be factors, [and] well try to do a good job of moving the pocket a bit so he wont just be a target back there at seven yards, to allow him to get the ball downfield," Shoop said. "It will be the same offense again with the emphasis on the things Rex does well."
Shoops last hope in Chicago at rehabilitating his image as an NFL offensive coordinator may hinge on the Bears offense not looking the same with Grossman as it did with Stewart and Chandler. Just as Grossman has the final three games to develop as a quarterback, Shoop has the same time frame to demonstrate an ability to adapt and innovate better than he did with the Kordell Stewart experiment.
Stewart expected more flexibility from Shoop, and believes their inability to mesh, as much as anything, contributed to what the quarterback considered a hasty demotion after only five games. In fact, the most consistent element to the Bears offense this season has been criticism of Shoop, externally and internally.
Earlier this season, players questioned him for not stretching the defense with deeper passes. Then last week, after the Bears threw deep, running back Anthony Thomas complained after getting only nine carries.
