the last of Johnsons three trips to his home state this season.
"The most frustrating part has been the losing, but I knew coming to a second-year team that we were going to lose some games," the rookie receiver said. "Its hard to run the table in the NFL. Its not like college. Youre playing against great guys every week. You have to lay it on the line every week. Were still growing as a team. Things are going to get better for us. Our day is coming."
And when it does, Johnson will be a big part of it -- bigger than he has been this season. Johnsons statistics (52 catches for 789 yards and four touchdowns) are respectable, especially considering how long it takes rookie receivers to adapt to the NFL.
Hes on pace to join Arizonas Anquan Bolden as the first rookie receivers to catch at least 60 passes since Troy Edwards did it for Pittsburgh in 1999. With a strong finish, Johnson could surpass 1,000 receiving yards, teaming with Bolden (who has 1,155) to become the first rookies to accomplish that feat since Minnesotas Randy Moss in 1998.
One has to wonder how much better Johnsons numbers would be if he had more passes thrown his way. Bolden, far and away, has been the most productive rookie receiver this year, and one of the best regardless of experience. The Cardinals rookie, who was drafted in the second round, is tied for fourth in the NFL with 79 catches and is third in receiving yards.
Is Bolden a more talented player or a better receiver than Johnson, whom the Texans chose with the third overall selection? As Thompson put it: "Good luck finding anyone outside the state of Arizona who would say he is."
Regardless, Bolden has been given more opportunities to make plays.
Bolden has been the target of 130 passes this season, trailing only Tory Holt (150) and Moss (145). If you scan down the list -- all the way to No. 27 -- youll find Johnson, who has been the intended receiver of 93 passes through the Texans 13 games.
An average of 7.2 intended passes per game might seem like a lot
