Arizona safeties drifted back to double-team the 49ers outside receivers on the games opening play, Garcia was ready and hit Jed Weaver for a 21-yard gain over the middle.
While the cover 2 has been responsible for some of the 49ers worst offensive performances all year, Weaver -- who had a career-high 76 yards against Arizona -- suddenly has emerged as the antidote.
"Basically, one safety is out of (the middle) because theyre doubling Terrell Owens," Weaver said. "So, almost three quarters of the field is open. To be able to get down there and make some plays is huge. Hopefully it will make teams be more honest and play more in the middle of the field, and we can get the playmakers on the outside making the big plays and scoring the touchdowns."
Why has such a simple concept taken so long to catch on with the 49ers?
The problems started this summer when tight end Eric Johnson, one of Garcias favorite targets over the last two years, broke his collarbone and was lost for the season.
Garcia and Weaver, who arrived in San Francisco in the offseason, didnt have the same rapport until the tight end approached Garcia about a month ago and suggested that the offense would improve if the two were on the same page.
"Hes not afraid to talk about it, which is a good thing," Garcia said. "It keeps our eyes open to what hes doing on the field. And hes just proven himself through a tremendous work ethic."
Garcia and Weaver started talking more, watched film together, and as a result, Weavers numbers have shot up in recent weeks.
Through the first nine games, he caught 13 balls for 146 yards. In the last four, he has caught 13 more for 145 yards.
One thing Weaver hasnt done all year, however, is catch the ball in the end zone -- something Garcia tried to remedy against the Cardinals.
The first time Weavers number was called, he was well-covered, and Garcia ran in for a touchdown himself. The second time, Garcia approached the line of scrimmage and saw that no one was covering Owens, who got the easy score.
