quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson spent countless hours this past offseason with Michael Vick working on the footwork in his dropback.
"Then he got injured, so he hasnt done anything for three months, so hes a little rusty as far as his fundamental technique and footwork go," Johnson said.
Vick completed 16 of 33 passes (48.5 percent) last Sunday night against the Carolina Panthers, a few ticks lower than his 54.9 percent last season. It wasnt exactly a surprise, as Vick was juiced on adrenaline in his first start of the season. He went through his reads a little quickly and made more than a few throws from off-balance positions that, it should be pointed out, were still often on-target.
"Hopefully, wed like to see him settle down just a little bit, a little more comfortable in the passing game and throw from the pocket a little more," Johnson said.
The plan for Vick for the last three games of the season is to not flood him with the technique work from before the season. Rather, coaches just want him to get on the field, run the plays hes comfortable with and improve in his understanding of protections and read progressions. After all, he still has only made 18 career starts.
The offseason will be the time to hone in on the technique work.
Said Johnson, "We all know that when Michael Vick is comfortable, hes pretty good."
It works for Vick, who said of his performance against the Panthers, "I just went back to the basics, doing whatever it takes to win." Asked what he would like to be able to say after the season, Vick answered, "I came back and played for my team. Thats it."
Vick is already anticipating 2004.
"Next years going to be a big year for us, I hope. I hope I make it to the first game," he said, laughing.
In the meantime ...
According to the Sports XChange, with offensive coordinator Pete Mangurian calling plays rather than Dan Reeves, Atlanta may be more inclined than even last Sunday to use sprint-out passes and the like.
And dont be surprised
