"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. Holmes has 19 TDs -- all rushing -- meaning he needs six in the final three games to tie the NFL record for rushing scores set by Emmitt Smith of Dallas in 1995.

He needs seven more touchdowns -- rushing or receiving -- against Detroit Sunday and in subsequent games against Minnesota and Chicago to tie the single-season touchdown record of 26 set by Marshall Faulk of St. Louis four years ago.

Thats very attainable in this offense, Holmes said. Im just waiting for it to come to me. Its something that was a focus for me personally. Now that were down to three games left, you start letting guys know youre looking forward to breaking it.

The record would be more significant to Holmes than the rushing title he won two seasons ago and probably would have repeated last season had he not lost the last two games to his hip injury.

Its his chance to make a lasting mark on the game.

That would be something thats set in stone, he said. There wont be any reason to boast about it or pump myself up. It is what it is. It will be something in the books.

Other than a likely spot in the Pro Bowl, the touchdown record might be the only individual honor out there for Holmes this season. He wont collect another rushing title, not while trailing the leader, Jamal Lewis of Baltimore, by 400 yards with three games to play.

To get the record, Holmes will need to get the ball more than he did in Denver. He had only 12 carries, three in the second half. Thats a season low for Holmes. Only three times since joining the Chiefs has he had fewer carries.

Head coach Dick Vermeil, seeking better offensive balance, all but promised a larger dose of Holmes against the Lions.

If we get 30 rushes, were really tough to beat, Vermeil said. We didnt run the ball enough last week. We should have been able to run the ball better than we did but the game disintegrated
