Like Schottenheimer, Brees is hopeful his time on the sidelines will be beneficial when he re-takes the field on Sunday.
"I think, looking back on it now, and Im probably not going to appreciate this until maybe years from now. ... Who knows when Ill really, really appreciate it. ... But yeah, I think it helped," said Brees. "There is definitely a lot that I learned from sitting out. I think there is a lot that everybody learned by me sitting out. Im going to take the things that I did learn, and I know they are going to make me a better player."
Added Flutie: "Five years from now or whatever it is, looking back at this and Drew is winning football games and taking this team to the playoffs, everybody will understand."
The biggest lesson Brees learned was to keep things simple.
"For one, dont over-analyze things. Take what you know, believe in it, and go out and do it," said Brees. "Dont try and change the things that have made you successful from the very beginning."
Added Brees: "I will use the things that Ive learned from being out for five weeks. The main thing Ive learned is to believe in yourself and trust what youve done all along and just continue to do it and continue to build on it. Dont over-complicate things. Its a simple game. I know what Im doing. Ive been doing it for a long time. Im smart. I prepare well. I work hard out here. So theres no reason that I shouldnt go out and be successful."
Since making the decision to switch to Flutie five weeks ago, Schottenheimer has been taking a one-week-at-a-time approach to the quarterback situation. The head coach still feels that way, but if he plays well, Brees, who opened the season as the starter, will finish it that way, too.
"Drew Brees is our starting quarterback. Doug Flutie came in a tough situation. Were fortunate to have him, but Drew Brees is our starting quarterback," said Schottenheimer. "Hes gone through what any number of young quarterbacks will. I thought now was the appropriate time (to bring him back in)."
