role shouldnt change anything in the 49ers game plan, but his teammates are hoping the extra responsibility provides a jump to the offense, which couldnt get in the end zone in last weeks humiliating 44-6 loss at Baltimore.
"This is what both of those guys have been looking for," Jeff Garcia said. "It could be good for this offense having one guy back there who can get into a rhythm and hopefully get a chance to break some big runs."
Barlow has earned the 49ers trust with his heady play this season, which was highlighted by his 78-yard touchdown run last month against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Hearst is dropped after the season -- a possibility, given the teams probable youth movement -- Barlow could be the starter next year.
"Its going to take offseason work," Lappano said. "Hes going to have to get in the weight room and get stronger. Hes got the size to do that, but hes going to have to work harder than hes ever worked -- but this game is where it starts. This is his big day. ..."

According to Contra Costa Times beat man Cam Inman, Tai Streets still is a starter, but his productivity and playing time have slipped considerably after a strong start to the season.
Streets had no receptions in last Sundays loss at Baltimore, and he played only 31 of 66 snaps. Much of Streets playing time has gone to rookie Brandon Lloyd, who had 37 snaps Sunday. Streets has practiced only once a week most of the season because of what he called tendinitis in his quadriceps/knees.
"I feel fine on Sundays," Streets said. "Youd like to practice as much as you can. But when the doctor says you need to rest, youve got to do whatever you can to play games. ... Its frustrating. And were losing. Nothings going right for us."
Inman went on to note that Streets 35 receptions, only 11 have come in the past six games for the 5-7 49ers. He also was shut out three games ago, a Nov. 17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Streets, an unrestricted free agent at seasons
