According to Chargers.com staff writer David Neville, head coach Marty Schottenheimer admitted to leaning towards Drew Brees earlier in the week, but wanted to wait and see how the third-year quarterback performed in practice over the past few days.
Clearly, he liked what he saw.
"I had a reasonably good idea, but I wanted to wait and see how the week unfolded," said Schottenheimer in announcing Brees return to the starting lineup. "Its a decision that I felt was the appropriate one. Its not a reflection on Doug Fluties performance. At the outset, I made the statement. ... And I still think its true. ... Drew needed an opportunity to step back and look at it from a different perspective. (Now its time to) find out exactly what kind of progress he made."
Added Schottenheimer: "I just wanted to make sure the timing in the passing game was there for Drew. He hadnt gotten nearly as many snaps over the past four or five weeks. He got all of them today."
"Im happy to be back in the saddle," said Brees. "Weve got three big games left. Wed love to get a win in all of them. Thats what were setting out to do. Its good to be back involved, getting reps again and looking forward to a game that you know you are going to play in and start in and hopefully be successful in."
While disappointed, Fluties been around football long enough to understand the decision.
"No question about it, I understand. I pretty much knew it was coming," said Flutie. "Marty definitely did not tell us anything until this morning, so we were up in the air all week. But I had the feeling early in the week. Obviously, you want to be out on the field and play, but you totally understand the situation. I know that Drew needs to get back out on the field and show that he can lead this team and regain the confidence in the guys around him and for himself. And the only way
