"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

One way to slow that blitz would be establishing the run with Curtis Martin, who needs just 47 yards to become the second player in league history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first nine seasons; Barry Sanders did it 10 times.

And as New York Times staff writer Judy Battista suggested Friday, if Martins profile seems considerably lower than Sanders, it is merely because he has gone about his career so quietly, with a minimum of breakaway highlight-reel runs, but also with little embracing of the spotlight.

Head coach Herman Edwards believes that Martin will be appreciated only if he is inducted into the Hall of Fame. It is a long way for a player who wasnt sure he even wanted to play football after Bill Parcells told him he was going to draft him for the Patriots in 1995, and who, even as a kid, never wanted to play for the Jets because he thought they were the worst team in the league.

Martin came from a difficult background -- he has spoken repeatedly of the friends he lost to violence and of his own wild days as a youth -- making his football exploits and his modesty all the more noteworthy.

"For me, its one of the most humbling reflections I have," Martin said, looking back on his remarkable career. "I say, Why me? Who am I that someone so bad and so contrary to whats right, to end up in a situation like this? It makes me so grateful. Thats why I tell people its hard for me to be big-headed or arrogant because it definitely wasnt in my plans to be in this situation. I was just taking it one step at a time and I ended up here. ..."
