How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. Over the past few years, technology has allowed the interfaces for online drafts to become much more user-friendly, meaning that beginners and experts alike can easily select an entire team in a short period of time.

staffer Kevin Goheen reminded readers that in one three-game stretch last month, the Bengals ran the ball whenever they wanted and however they wanted. For three straight weeks, the Bengals rushed for 200 or more yards while pounding out victories against Houston, Kansas City and San Diego.

The last two weeks, however, havent been as kind to the running game. The Bengals have managed just a combined 213 yards against Pittsburgh and Baltimore, two top-10 defenses. They face their third straight top-10 defense this week when San Francisco comes to town for Sundays game. The 49ers are ranked No. 9 overall and No. 8 against the run this season.

"Were going to try to establish the running game, like we try every week," said Bengals center Rich Braham. "Weve got to win the game. If it means running for 200 thats what weve got to do. If weve got to pass for 400, weve got to do it. Whatever it calls for."

In the three 200-yard games, plus a 194-yard performance against Seattle on Oct. 26, the Bengals ran the ball at least 33 times. Against the Steelers and Ravens, they had a total of 46 rushing attempts. They managed just 18 and 15 first downs, respectively, against Pittsburgh and Baltimore, while against Houston, Kansas City and San Diego they produced at least 21 first downs each game.

Those extra first downs equated to extra opportunities to run the ball.

"You cant run for 300 yards every game," said rookie fullback Jeremi Johnson. "On certain defenses you can run the ball, and that has a lot to do with it. Its not us. Its not the game plan. There are some things we need to work on but that doesnt mean its not working."

Rudi Johnson (three) and Corey Dillon (one) combined for 100-yard games in four out of five weeks, but in the last two weeks neither has been able to reach the 50-yard mark. Against San Diego -- the first game in which they shared the role of featured back -- they combined to run the ball 35 times. Neither has had more than 11 rushing attempts the past two games.
