How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. Over the past few years, technology has allowed the interfaces for online drafts to become much more user-friendly, meaning that beginners and experts alike can easily select an entire team in a short period of time.

the entire journey, but Boldin has started much faster than the 17 receivers of the modern era who are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Boldin has 79 catches for 1,155 yards. Among the Hall of Fame receivers, Steve Largent had 54 catches in 1976 as a rookie and Paul Warfield 52 in 1964 to lead the way. Warfields 920 receiving yards was the best of the Hall of Famers during a rookie season.

Boldin began his push for December with nine catches for 123 yards last Sunday at San Francisco.

Boldin has two things going for him that could keep his numbers high through the closing three weeks: The Cardinals often get behind early and have to throw, and they do not have an established receiver among their corps. Boldin clearly is the go-to guy.

To counterbalance those positives, however, Boldin wont know from game to game during the closing three weeks who might be attempting to deliver the ball. Second-year backup Josh McCown gets his first pro start Sunday against Carolina. No. 3 man Preston Parsons also is expected to see action, although perhaps not in this game. ...

Also of interest. ...

Emmitt Smith is having the worst season of his pro career, not only because he is on a lousy team but because he had a longer injury absence (six weeks) than hed had in all his previous years combined. He did end one horrible streak last Sunday at San Francisco: His skid of negative-yardage games, the only two of his career, stopped when he gained 15 yards on four carries.

Smith has been a good soldier through the ordeal but he became testy this week discussing his inability to make something happen, stopping just short of blaming an underperforming right side of the offensive line -- guard Leonard Davis and tackle Anthony Clement. ...

And finally. ...

Five Cardinals, including three starters -- including left tackle L.J. Shelton, missed their second straight practice because of upper-respiratory infections. So far,
