The rest of his NFL rookie experience has been different. He started every game his past two seasons at Penn State. With Arizona, Johnson not only missed time because of a shoulder injury, but has not started (in a two-receiver set) since Oct. 5.
Johnsons audition for his 2004 role begins with the Carolina game Sunday, when he will start in place of Bryan Gilmore. The shot comes despite Johnsons numbers in the past three games (five catches, 27 yards) and his contract numbers.
A $1.755 million bonus will kick in if Johnson participates in 35 percent of the seasons offensive plays. He was the Cardinals top draft pick this year, taken 17th overall.
"Theyre going to give me an opportunity, and Im going to make the best of it," Johnson said. "Ive just got to make plays when theyre available to me. Im going to go out there and fight hard because thats the type of person I am."
Johnson has 28 catches for 328 yards and one touchdown. Half of those catches came in the first three games. Its a sliver of the production of fellow rookie Anquan Boldin, whose success Johnson takes as a source for optimism.
"I feel like Im a more polished player than at the beginning of the year, as far as my techniques," Johnson said. "Being a good technician was the toughest thing. Sometimes in college, you can get away with certain things that you cant out here."
