And as Taylor noted, Parcells wants his backup running backs to be contributors on special teams. Hambrick was a good special teams player early in his Dallas career, but he wasnt as effective in 2002 and he didnt play special teams in 2003 because of his duties at tailback. ...
Also according to Taylor, owner Jerry Jones now says he doesnt think quarterback Kerry Collins will play for Dallas this season. Jones said the club has explored its options and -- at this time -- wants to keep its current set of quarterbacks.
"Quincy [Carter] is doing great," Jones said. "Hes stronger than he was last year and hes throwing well. He knows hes going to have competition, and thats going to make him a better player. ..."
In Chicago. ... A day after general manager Jerry Angelo was given permission to speak with Browns quarterback Tim Couch about a possible trade, head coach Lovie Smith downplayed the teams interest in the sixth-year signal-caller.
"Every guy that becomes available, you look at," Smith told Sporting News Radio on Thursday. "However, we like who we have right now. Were not openly pursuing any quarterback. We think we have the guy to lead us in our system right now.
"Tim is a good quarterback, just like Kurt Warner and Kerry Collins. All those guys are good quarterbacks, but theyre not the fit for us. We like who we have."
But Chicago Tribune staffer David Haugh, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the process, reported this morning that Angelo opened preliminary talks with Couchs agent, Tom Condon. The discussion was described as positive.
