when he and his agent failed to void the final three years of his contract.
It led to angry words being exchanged between the team and agent Jerome Stanley, with Stanley vowing Northcutt would never play in Cleveland again.
But as trade possibilities for Northcutt dwindle -- the Baltimore Ravens were interested, but acquired Kevin Johnson instead -- the Browns hope to convince Northcutt his best option is to stay.
According to McManamon, the Browns have offered Northcutt a slight increase in pay for the next two years, with the promise that after two years he will be a free agent. Nobody knows if Northcutt will attend the mini-camp. ...
In Oakland. ... According to Contra Costa Times staff writer Steve Corkran, the Raiders signed a little-known quarterback Wednesday but made more news by their reported interest in free-agent quarterback Kerry Collins.
The Raiders already have quarterbacks Rich Gannon, Marques Tuiasosopo and Tee Martin on their roster. Still, head coach Norv Turner said Sunday that he has interest in adding another veteran quarterback, though he ruled out the St. Louis Rams Kurt Warner, who might be released after June 1.
Collins apparently isnt ready to settle for a backup role.
"It may be hard for me to find a job as a starter now, but I believe Im a starter," Collins told reporters shortly after his release. "I believe Ive got a lot of good years left. Hopefully therell be some options and Ill try to pick the one thats best for me."
Collins agent, David Dunn, claims hes already been contacted by officials from four teams -- the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals and Raiders, although team officials in Arizona deny that claim.
For what its worth, Collins has two significant ties to a pair of the above-mentioned organizations.
