How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

point someone else will be the starting quarterback for this team, but I havent put much thought into it."

The Packers have.

Although they hope Favre can play at least two more years, they realize hes 34 and entering his 14th NFL season, and they would like to start grooming his successor as soon as they can.

They failed to land a quarterback in the draft last weekend, however, and with the Couch negotiations stalled, they re-signed Doug Pederson, who took most of the snaps at mini-camp Wednesday.

According to Associated Press sports writer Arnie Stapleton, the Packers are trying to rework the final two years of Couchs deal, which call for him to make $15.6 million.

"Nothing new to report" on the talks, Andrew Brandt, the teams chief negotiator, said Wednesday. "Were continuing discussions about trying to find the right contract for the Packers and for Tim."

The Packers mini-camp runs through Sunday and head coach Mike Sherman said hed like to get a deal done in time for Couch to attend part of it, because the second and final mini-camp isnt until June.

"If were able to get this deal done, as any coach would, I obviously would like to get the young man in here as soon as possible so he can learn and become part of the football team," Sherman said.

Favre said he takes a sense of pride in knowing the Packers havent had to use a high draft pick or make a big trade to land his presumptive successor.

"Im glad that over my career we havent had to put much thought into it and weve been able to draft at other positions," he said. "I take pride in that. If Tim Couch is a fit here, it remains to be seen. If its someone else, it remains to be seen. I dont really worry about it. ..."

Also in Cleveland. ... The Browns continue to try to talk to wide receiver Dennis Northcutt in hopes Northcutt might decide to return to the Browns.

Northcutt missed the chance to become a free agent
