How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

interest in acquiring quarterback Tim Couch.

The Browns gave the Bears permission to talk to Couch and his agent, Tom Condon, about redoing Couchs contract, the first step in any possible trade.

"Well proceed with them the same way we proceeded with Green Bay," head coach Butch Davis said.

But as McManamon suggested: "What he didnt say was that its always better when trying to trade a player to have at least two teams interested."

Couch and the Packers have been talking for weeks about a new contract that could have sent Couch to Green Bay as Brett Favres backup. Nothing was finalized, and now the Packers have competition from a division rival.

Davis said he heard from Bears general manager Jerry Angelo early in the afternoon. The Bears have long been rumored as a team that might be interested in Couch.

Chicago has Rex Grossman, a first-round pick a year ago, Jonathan Quinn and just-drafted Craig Krenzel of Ohio State at quarterback.

Its conceivable that the Bears could be interested in bringing Couch in to compete with Grossman.

McManamon added that Couch will not attend the Browns mini-camp this weekend. The team does not want him to get hurt at the facility, which would require them to pay his $7.6 million salary.

The Browns have Jeff Garcia, Kelly Holcomb, just-drafted Luke McCown and Nate Hybl at quarterback -- Couchs locker has been cleared out.

In a related note. ... Favre doesnt care if Couch comes to Green Bay.

"I havent put much thought into it, really," the veteran signal caller told reporters Wednesday. "Im just concerned about what Im doing and continuing to play the way Ive played, to try to be there every week."

Favre has started 208 straight games, a record for an NFL quarterback.

"Ive never been concerned about who would play if I got hurt, because I dont anticipate that happening," Favre said. "I realize that at some
