teams Super Bowl loss to New England where the Patriots defensive backs were flagrantly illegal in their tactics.
Martz frequently noted during the 2003 season that the penalty was not being called and that Bruce was the teams player most often affected.
"Isaacs skills have not diminished at all," Martz told reporters at the league meeting last week. "Isaac doesnt say anything to anybody about it. But if Isaac wore a rubber jersey, hed have been snapped clear to Bakersfield two years ago."
When asked whether the renewed focus will favor the offense, Martz said, "To me, it evens things up. Because now its skill on skill. Whats been happening is its not the little grabs that are a problem. Its those blatant things where the defensive back latches onto the jersey, and pulls it tight. And as the receivers running down the field, hes actually dragging the defensive back with him.
"So if I cant run as fast as the receiver, I equal the playing field just by grabbing his jersey and having him pull along the route."
The more physical youre allowed to be at corner, down the field, then the less skill you need. Then you dont have to pay those corners all that money any more. You can just get a nice safety thats pretty good."
The jersey tugging is the biggest culprit, according to Martz, in how things have gotten out of hand.
"Thats become a real issue just within the last few years," he explained. "Before that, you just didnt have a lot of grabbing of the jersey. It was really never an issue. But at this point, its just flagrant now."
When a reporter advised him that Steelers coach Bill Cowher believes offensive coaches will gain an advantage, Martz said, "I would tell Bill Cowher that whether he realizes it or not, he coaches offense, too. ..."

In column published last Thursday, SportsLine.com insider Pete Prisco advised readers its looking more and more like Kurt Warner will be a June 1 salary-cap casualty. That didnt appear to be the case a month or two
