How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

salary -- currently the lowest for an NFL veteran starting quarterback, but now realizes the addition of Roethlisberger may change that.

The 6-5 Roethlisberger has size, excellent arm strength and is mobile. He comes off an especially impressive 2003 season in which he completed 69 percent of his passes for 4,486 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

For now, the Steelers plan to go into the season with Maddox as the starter, though Cowher has not ruled out Roethlisberger starting sometime this season.

Despite the unhappiness, Cowher said he doesnt expect Roethlisbergers presence to affect how Maddox plays or practices. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress also expects Maddox to respond to the competition.

"Ive been playing with him for two years now and I pretty much know hell step up and defend his position," Burress told Robinson.

The Steelers have not said what they would do if Maddox, who will be 33 in September, asks to be released to pursue a job with another team. With nearly every NFL team now set at quarterback in advance of training camp, Maddox may not be able to find a team that would let him compete to start.

Even if the Maddox goes into the Steelers training camp in late July as the starter, Cowher will not promise there wont be a training camp competition.

"I cant tell you right now how thats going to unfold," Cowher said. "I just know that Im not going to sit here and say were not going to do something. Id like to stay open-minded about it and let it play out.

"He is our incumbent starter; Im not saying things cant change. ..."

Also of interest. ...

According to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review staffer Jerry DiPaola, Burress, whose contract expires after this season, said he hasnt heard any talk from the team about a new one.

"Well find out what they want to do, whether they want me or not," he said. "The situation Im in, it speaks volumes about me and it says a lot about them."

He said he has no control over the situation.

"Thats not up to me, whether they want me or not.
