Thomas added, however, there was apparently more to Faulks cleanup surgery this offseason than initially advertised. The good news is that head coach Mike Martz believes the procedure will prove to be very beneficial to the veteran superstar.
"The surgery actually was a real positive thing," Martz told Thomas. "He felt like when he went in that he might have an arthritic knee. Once a back has an arthritic knee, basically his careers over.
"But when they did the surgery, they found a flap (of cartilage). They were about to come out of there, and they were thinking [the knee] was arthritic. And then they found this flap, they lifted it up, and thats where the problem was.
"They lifted up this cartilage and basically scratched it. The reaction of the body is that (the surface) gets tacky, and pulls it down and seals it. So the knee has been fixed, so to speak."
Martz went on to suggest the procedure could prolong Faulks career and that Faulk should be at full speed in time for the Rams full-squad mini-camp in late May.
But as Thomas summed up: "The latest surgery is yet another example of why running back may be a higher priority in this draft than most observers think. ..."
Also according to Thomas, speedster Kevin Curtis recently underwent additional surgery to repair the broken left leg he suffered last preseason.
The second-year receiver wont be able to take part in any running drills for a while, but the Rams expect Curtis to have his speed back once his rehabilitation is completed.
A healthy Curtis could help stretch defenses and take some pressure off starters Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce. ...
