How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

after Lewis turned himself in to Atlanta authorities.

"The new contract will be in the making once everything pans out," Lewis said. "My main concern right now is about this little situation, so we didnt go forth with the negotiations.

"I wouldnt expect [the Ravens] to offer me anything right now; its all part of the business. The new deal will come in due time. If I didnt prove last year that I was the best running back in the league, I will prove it hands down this season."

Lewis went on to tell Preston he intends to appear at team mini-camps on May 17, June 7 and June 14 and at training camp, to which players report July 29.

Maintaining a playing weight of about 240 to 245 pounds had been a problem for Lewis, but he said he is currently at 245. Two years ago in the offseason, his weight climbed as high as 260 pounds.

He said that he started offseason training about two weeks after his Pro Bowl appearance in Honolulu on Feb. 8 and that his legal problems havent interfered with the workouts. Lewis went on to say hes been working out about nine times a week with a personal trainer, mostly with the intention of building his speed.

According to Preston, Lewis was relaxed throughout the interview and at one point the star tailback joked and talked about his bland diet of chicken breast and fruit. ...

In Cincinnati. ... As reported by the Associated Press, recently demoted signal caller Jon Kitna signed a one-year contract extension with the Bengals on Tuesday.

Kitna, who had his best NFL season as quarterback in 2003 before being demoted to backup last month, is now signed through 2005. Terms of the deal were not released.

Kitna had career highs in pass completions (324), passing yards (3,591), touchdown passes (26) and completion percentage (62 percent) last season, and was the only quarterback in the league to play every offensive snap for his team in 2003.

Despite Kitnas performance, head coach Marvin Lewis has decided to go with Carson Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick
