"We took into account both scenarios of having him on the team and not having him on the team," Sundquist said. "It was probably best not really knowing, to plan that he might not be here so we could be strong at the position."
With Sharpe returning and Weaver and Santiago in the fold, the Broncos carry seven tight ends on the roster. Those three are joined by holdovers Jeb Putzier, Dwayne Carswell, Patrick Hape and Mike Leach.
Thats a crowded field, but the Broncos carried five tight ends throughout the 2003 season and all saw playing time. Sundquist believes Sharpes presence and example will only aid the group -- particularly Santiago and Weaver.
"I think it will only help those guys and their careers," Sundquist said.
Since Sharpe was already under contract, the return has no negative ramifications on the teams salary cap.
Sharpe is the NFLs career leader in receptions (815) and yards (10,060) at his position, and last season he passed Jerry Smith for most touchdowns with 62.
Last season, the 35-year-old Sharpe caught 62 passes for 770 yards and eight touchdowns, second in the AFC to Kansas Citys Tony Gonzalez. ...

In Minnesota. ... According to Minneapolis Star Tribune staff writer Kevin Seifert, the plantar fasciitis in Randy Moss foot recently has shown some improvement, but the Vikings receiver still might sit out next months mini-camp as a precaution.
Head coach Mike Tice said he told Moss, "If youre not 100 percent, then youre standing next to me during practice."
The mini-camp in question is scheduled for May 7-9.
