on his behalf by the NFL Players Association -- could be headed toward a solution that appeases not only the fourth-year receiver but the Denver Broncos, too.
According to Rocky Mountain News staff writer Lee Rasizer, the teams have initiated trade talks regarding Northcutt, who led Cleveland last season with 62 catches for 729 yards and two touchdowns.
In an article published early Tuesday, Washington Post staffer Mark Maske cited league sources -- speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the pending grievance -- as saying that Northcutt does not have a strong case.
But another source told Maske that outgoing Browns president Carmen Policy has pledged to "do right" by Northcutt and avoid punishing the player too harshly for the contract blunder.
As Rasizer put it: "Northcutt would provide the Broncos with a veteran receiver with top-notch return skills. Meanwhile, the Browns would get compensation for an unhappy player victimized by a mistake made by his agent, Jerome Stanley."
Stanley missed a February deadline to void the rest of the receivers contract, binding him to Cleveland contractually for three more years.
Of course, Terrell Owens agent also missed a February deadline to void the remainder of his clients contract, but Owens still managed to get his way.
But Owens deadline had been moved up by an agreement between the league and the NFLPA. And unfortunately for Northcutt, the deadline to void his contract was moved back by that same agreement. ...
Also in Cleveland. ... Ron Wolf resigned as a part-time personnel consultant to the Browns on Tuesday, less than three months after being hired by the club.
According to Associated Press sports writer Tom Withers, Wolf, who built the Green Bay Packers into a Super Bowl champion, said his decision to leave the Browns was tied into Policys resignation as team president.
