NFL Standings & Best Regular Season Records

In the first 13 years of professional football there was no postseason, so the team with the best record in the league was crowned the champion. In 1933, the first postseason game was held when the Chicago Bears beat the New York Giants in the Championship game 23 - 21. This would begin the tradition of postseason games. A few times 2 leagues existed at the same time, such as the NFL and AAFC from 1946 1949 and the NFL and AFL from 1960 1969, but the champions of each league did not play. In 1966 the first Super Bowl was held which pitted the NFL champion against the AFL champion. 4 years later the NFL and AFL would merge into the NFL and the teams were divided into the AFC and NFC conferences. The Super Bowl game then became a matchup between the AFC and NFC conference champion and has existed in that form to the present. Browse all standings and postseason results for every pro football season.
