There have been approximately 407 pro football coaches since 1920. In the early years many coaches also played and were known as player coaches. Some of the more famous player coaches were George Halas, Jim Thorpe and Curly Lambeau. As the preparation and responsibilities of the coach increased it became more and more difficult for someone to coach and play at the same time. Eventually player coaches became full time coaches and no longer played. Although the success of a coach ultimately depends on the players, their role cannot be understated, and regardless of the talent level of a team, it is impossible for a team to be successful these days without the dedication and time put in by all of the coaches.
