Pro Football leagues in the United States date back to the early 1920s. Its origins can be traced from early versions of rugby, but it differentiated itself in the early 20th century when Walter Camp introduced the line of scrimmage and rules about down and distance. The popularity of collegiate football would eventually lead to the formation of a professional football league. The evolution of the game, such as the forward pass, has led to new positions taking prominence over the years, but the division between the defensive and offensive sides of the ball has always existed. In the early years many players played multiple positions and played on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Nowadays, players rarely play both ways and some positions have even become so specialized that players do them and nothing else such as long snapper or punt and kickoff returner.
